Community Interview with Story Teller (1)

1. About ST :

I do not know a greater fall for a dragon than, the one which occurs when it takes refuge in its own heart. Some said that a dragon falls because fly too high, I say … I don’t know other ‘fall’, than the one resulting from your own will. You sow dragons falling? They fall… following their own will. Nothing is more dangerous than this. After 14 years of 9Dragons I decided to open again the long forgotten books of dragons and share my stories with you all.

2. What you think about 9d Avatars 2007 vs 2020 ?

I said this in 2009 : most of 9dragons avatars are made for soap opera, talk -shows, internet geeks, otaku’s pages, illness clinics as pvp abusers of others. They love to contradict with others when they can’t even debate in paragraphs or know the game lore and story. They don’t know why they play white and black clan. “Sucking up” in order to gain a position or items became a way to live in 9Dragons for many players. I don’t like this people, I don’t like what they represent, I don’t like what they become. They love circus and circus loves them.”Why?”, “What are they?”, “Where they go?” are questions they should answer themselves.

On the other hand are the old school and the good people. They now have the obligation to educate the rest in the spirit of 9d community when game started and in the spirit of the lore and story.

Think, therefore I am…it is a journey that everyone have to make it. Think about it.

3. Like me you love wuxia stories. What you can tell us about wuxia, the genre that inspired 9dragons story ?

Wuxia (武侠) is a broad genre of Chinese fiction that concerns itself with martial arts adventures set primarily in ancient China. Although traditionally a literary art form, it is now also found in art, comics, films, games, television, theatre, and other media. Wuxia forms a large part of popular culture for most Chinese-speaking communities around the world.

The word “wuxia” is a compound word composed from the words xia (俠, “honorable”, “chivalrous”), which is the philosophy of the Chinese knight-errant, and wu (武, “martial”, “military”), from the Chinese term wushu (武術, “martial arts” or “kungfu”). A martial artist who follows the code of xia is often referred to as a “swordsman” in works of wuxia, although he may not necessarily wield a sword. He is also sometimes called a xiake (俠客, lit: “follower of xia”) or yóuxiá (游俠, “wandering xia”).

The heroes in Chinese wuxia do not usually serve a lord, wield military power or belong to the aristocratic class. They are often from the lower social classes in ancient Chinese society. Wuxia heroes are usually bound by a code of martial chivalry, that requires them to right wrongs, especially when the helpless are oppressed. The wuxia hero fought for righteousness, typically, seeking to remove an oppressor, or to bring retribution for past wrong-doing. The Chinese xia traditions are similar to those of the Japanese samurai’s bushido, the chivalry of the Western European knights and the gunslingers of America’s Westerns.

4. Let’s move to the story of 9dragons and the lore. What happened with it ?

Simple, JWG didn’t invest it in it. People love the stories, they buy books, looks at wuxia movies, live in love stories in real life. Story is life itself. Stories have to be told or they die, and when they die, we can't remember who we are or why we're here. Look at the people inside the game now, they don’t know they play Chinese people in Ming dynasty and are drawn in a war of 9dragons as imperial clans and infernal clans. Because none tells them that. The story teach the people.

5. What about the 9dragons events ? What happen there after 14 years ?

They lost the touch. Same old things repeat. Let me show you this screens from 2010 in korean server of Christmas Event. Same decorations were last year in Hefei. They need to design something new and bring the fun and stories of events back in game. Nobody is excited over events now.

6. What you think about the people who spend a lot of time in 9dragons (game addicts) and what about the cultural difference between asian gamers and western ?

An obsession with spending too much time in the virtual world can have serious consequences in real life. In January, the WHO defined the disorder as a pattern of behavior characterized by “impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other daily activities, and continuation or escalation of gaming despite the occurrence of negative consequences”. Video game addiction can affect people’s mental health, leaving them feeling unsatisfied in the real world.

Asian gamers are very competitive and are driven by completion (the appeal of collecting points/stars/trophies, completing quests/achievements/tasks). The pressure of learning and working environment has driven both adults and children to the virtual world where, they can easily and quickly be entertained and also boost their self-esteem. In Asia now, the industry started limit the playing time of their games. My advice now as a parent to parents is that they really need a lot of patience to help their children move back to the right path from gaming.

As for western gamers, Santos wrote this truth long time ago, when 9d was launch: ”the idea behind gaming in Western development seems to be centered around one primal idea; the power fantasy. This is about enabling the player, giving them access to abilities and experiences far beyond their normal sphere of existence in the interests of allowing them to feel like Superman. It is, in other words, the “Charles Atlas school of videogames,” allowing people who have had sand kicked in their faces to redeem themselves in super-heroic fashion. It is, simply, allowing people to feel powerful. The goal is to give the player the feeling that even if they are bullied, oppressed or somehow contained and restrained in real life, here, in this game, they can cut loose and experience the thrill of being more powerful than everyone else around them. Western games try their damnedest to make sure that the gamer can forget whatever sense of impotency they might feel in their normal lives. This is a crucial component of many Western games, the supremely powerful “lone wolf.” This is a hero (or occasionally heroine) that often comes out of nowhere, fully formed, incredibly powerful, and is usually the only person capable of solving the problems presented in game, most often accompanied with great praise, admiration and other forms of positive reinforcement from characters populating the world.”

Westerns are more attract to motivation, story, fantasy, discovery, design and strategy.

They are two worlds apart, that is why many game developers don’t mix the cultures in their servers and that is why 9Dragons need it a western adaptation and Acclaim hired Steve Altman.

7. What can you tell about the pet system, how we imagine years ago and how it is now?

I imagine I would fly on a sword in 2020 and have a heaven beast that can fight or ride. If you remember we wrote about it in 2011, when Dream Dragons Online took the game patent or whatever happen and try to put a pet system online. Let’s remember through images and video.

8. What you would say to the developers team ?

You guys lack imagination. 14 years we wait for new clans and kung fu styles. You have to change the graphic to bring more people in. You have to change a lot and bring new things to 9dragons, now is 2020, wake up from 2007 and do your job proper. Change the engine, your codes are very old.

9. How to attract more players into 9d game ?

All in this industry in which I also work is about marketing& advertising. Here are some tips from specialists :

Identify Target Audience — First, you need to identify your ideal gamer. Although this may seem obvious, it is something that is more often than not missed. It is crucial that you understand who your target audience is. Start by generating an ideal persona, to help you understand your target audiences ideal demographic. By understanding your target audience, you can best structure your marketing and advertising efforts to target those individuals.

Marketing Creativity — Just as important in understanding who your target audience is, it is crucial to have some creativity to your marketing campaigns. In such a crowded space, it is imperative that your marketing efforts stand out from the crowd. Don’t just follow the trends, find put some of that creative energy used to create your game into your marketing campaigns and efforts. Be bold, be unique and stand out.

Tailor Accordingly — Tailor your game description to your target audience’s tastes. Identify keywords that are relevant to your target audience and create a compelling description of your game. Like the blurb on a book, the description needs to sell the game. Read, re-read and read again. Are there spelling and grammar mistakes? Is your description compelling?

Multi-Channel Marketing — With a large amount of social media networks out there to date, you need to use a broad range of them to hit your target audience. Start by identifying the social channels your target audience is more than likely to use, then tailor your marketing material to each channel. Utilise each channel’s resources by posting videos, pictures, voting polls and live streamers of your game. Don’t forget to acknowledge your community and audience, speaking directly to your community will give you the best possible insight into their likes and dislikes. Use this to your advantage.

Optimise and Amend! — There is no one size fits all for marketing. A lot of marketing efforts are trial and error, so don’t be surprised if you don’t get it right the first time. It may take a couple of attempts to find what works best for you and your game. Tweak your marketing material, content and message until you find what works.

10. How you see 9Dragons future?

If they will not change the engine and graphic I will not see any future. Providing gamers with the highest-quality online experiences that keep them playing longer and coming back for more should be the top priority of JWG and RF.
